Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to American

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary field hockey suffered a season-opening setback to American, 10-0, at Busch Field on Friday evening.

American scored twice in the first three quarters and put the game away with four goals in the final period.

The Eagles took an early lead as Elle Ridge redirected a penalty corner in the fourth minute to open the scoring. Junior Alexandra de Jesus, making her first career start in goal for W&M, made a crucial save on a penalty shot in the 12th minute. Despite a shot attempt by sophomore Josette DeGour in the 13th minute, which was saved by American's goalie Pauline Gineste, the quarter ended with W&M trailing 2-0.

American added to its lead with a goal just three minutes into the second quarter, this one from Agustina Roffo. It was the first of three goals for Roffo on the night. Sarah Steinman converted a penalty stroke in the 26th minute and the visitors led 4-0 at the half.

Senior Eme Schmittel tallied her second career defensive save in the 42nd minute, but American extended its lead with goals by Roffo and Emilia Winkler, resulting in a 6-0 lead after three quarters.

The Eagles scored less than a minute into the final period and added three more in picking up the season-opening win.

For the Tribe, de Jesus recorded four saves across her three quarters of action, while sophomore Emma Cari contributed two saves in the fourth quarter. Junior Sophie Ermellini, freshman Alora Chappell, and DeGour each recorded a shot on the night. Juniors Bridget Lawn, Anya Green, and Ellen Ford and freshman Lily Johnson make their first career starts for the Tribe.

The next challenge for W&M is a trip to Norfolk, Va., where they will face in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
