WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Center fielder
Ben Parker homered and extended his record-tying hitting streak, but his efforts were not enough as William & Mary fell to Charleston 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both starting pitchers settled into a groove early. W&M starter Zach Boyd set down the Charleston side in order in the top of the first, while Cougars' hurler Daniel Brooks posted a zero in the home half of the inning.
Parker, though, wasted no time getting aboard as he led off the first with a single to extend his hitting
streak to 32 games, tying the modern-era program record.
Charleston got on the board in the second on the strength of a solo home by Dylan Johnson. Boyd did come back to get a pair of strikeouts in the inning.
The Tribe responded in the bottom of the third when Parker mashed a home run that tied the game at 1-1.
Neither side scored in the fourth as both starters continued to duel. Charleston reclaimed the advantage in the fifth with an RBI double. The visitors then doubled their lead with a run-scoring single in the sixth as they went ahead 3-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Parker worked a leadoff walk. Following a walk to Christian Rush, second baseman Derek Holmes delivered with an RBI single to make it 3-2. The Tribe had two runners in scoring position, but a diving grab on a fly ball in left field ended the rally.
RHP Jack Weight, who entered in the sixth and got a swinging strikeout, was able to shut out the Cougars in the top of the seventh, stranding a runner at second. Weight went 1 ⅓ innings, racking up a pair of strikeouts and allowing no hits.
The Green & Gold got two runners aboard in the seventh but could not convert. RHP Reed Interdonato took over in the eighth, working around a pair of baserunners to hold Charleston scoreless.
After Charleston plated another run in the ninth, the Tribe had the winning run at the plate in the form of Parker with two runners aboard. However, CofC pitcher Davis Aiken retired Parker on a flyout to center to seal the win and record the save.
Brooks got the win for the Cougars, while Boyd was charged with the loss.
