Parker Breaks Hit Streak Record in Loss to Charleston

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Center fielder Ben Parker broke the modern-era program record for longest hitting streak at 33 games in William & Mary's 12-3 loss to Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Charleston (27-19, 10-11 CAA) set the tone early with three runs in the first inning, including a two-run homer by Dylan Johnson. The visitors would add four more in the third, collecting just two hits as they took advantage of three free passes issued by Tribe pitching.

In the bottom of the third, Parker etched himself into Tribe history with a double to right center. The Tribe could not score, however, as it was held without a run for the first six frames.

LHP Chad Yates entered to relieve in the fifth and delivered two scoreless innings, retiring all six batters he faced. The sophomore struck out three.

W&M (20-27, 13-8) got on the board in the seventh on a solo home run by DH Charlie Iriotakis.

The home team tacked on one more when Parker went deep in the eighth. For the day, the Tribe center fielder was 2-for-3 with a run, RBI, and six total bases.

Charleston scored four times in the ninth. W&M got one back in the last of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Iriotakis.

Cougars' starter Hayden Thomas got the win, while Ryan Feczko took the loss for the Tribe.

STAT NUGGETS
  • Parker surpassed Ben Guez' previous record hit streak of 32 games, set back in 2008.
  • Catcher Jerry Barnes III went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • LHP Phin Scott and RHP Tyler Kelly registered scoreless appearances on the mound.
