Baseball Drops Opener to Towson, 3-2

TOWSON, Md. — A late rally lifted Towson to a 3-2 win over William & Mary baseball on Thursday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park in the series opener between the two teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Towson struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff home run by Jordan Peyton.

The Tribe had a response in the second when right fielder Charlie Iriotakis and second baseman Henry Jackson hit back-to-back doubles, tying the game at one.

After W&M starter Nick Lottchea worked a scoreless second, the Tribe took the lead in the third on an RBI single by left fielder Lucas Carmichael.

The score would hold there for the next three innings as both pitching staffs settled in. Lottchea went five innings, holding the Tigers to four hits and no walks while striking out six batters. The senior helped himself in the third with a pickoff of a runner trying to steal second.

RHP Daniel Lingle entered in the sixth and delivered a scoreless inning. Towson would tie the contest in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly, making it 2-2.

The Tigers further rallied in the eighth, reclaiming the lead thanks to an RBI single from Brian Heckelman.

W&M nearly came back to tie the game in the top of the ninth after Iriotakis led off the frame with a double. He later reached third on a wild pitch, but three consecutive strikeouts ended the comeback attempt as Tigers' pitcher Nate Nabholz locked up the save.

Kyle Emmons was the winning pitcher for Towson, while RHP Carter Lovasz took the loss for the Tribe.

STAT NUGGETS
  • Iriotakis went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
