Baseball Drops Extra-Innings Marathon to Duke, 3-2

DURHAM, N.C. — Eleven William & Mary pitchers combined to hold the opposition to just six hits, but a walk-off single in the 12th proved the difference as the Tribe fell to Duke 3-2 in a marathon game on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field.

William & Mary (12-20) outhit the Blue Devils (22-12) 8-6 in the loss. First baseman Anthony Greco went 2-for-5 with a double, while third baseman Jamie Laskofski was on base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tribe got off to a hot start out of the gate when DH Ben Parker hit a leadoff double down the right field line. After advancing to third, center fielder Christian Rush drove his teammate by legging out an infield single to first base.

For Parker, the double extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

William & Mary went with a staff day on the mound. The Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, but opener Jack Weight was able to avoid further damage when he got an inning-ending strikeout with two runners in scoring position.

LHP Chad Yates and RHP Zach Boyd both put up zeroes in the second and third inning, respectively.

The Tribe reclaimed the advantage in the fourth when Laskofski doubled home Greco for a 2-1 lead. Freshman lefty Brennan Card got the visitors a shutdown inning in the home half of the frame, retiring the Blue Devils in order.

In the fifth, Card handed the ball to RHP Connor Kolarov, who let two runners on before getting a flyball out to end the inning unscathed.

LHP Ryan Feczko took his turn in the sixth. The graduate senior struck out three batters, sandwiched around a hit by pitch, to get W&M to the seventh with the lead intact.

The Blue Devils managed to tie the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. In the eighth, left fielder Lucas Carmichael singled to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Carmichael advanced to second on a wild pitch but would get no further.

LHP Tom Bourque shut down the home team in the eighth, recording a pair of strikeouts in the process. In the ninth, the Tribe's defense helped keep the game going. With the winning run at third, Rush caught a fly ball in center field and threw out the runner at the plate as Jerry Barnes III applied the tag.

RHP Tyler Kelly delivered two scoreless frames in the ninth and 10th, the latter in which he registered three strikeouts.

W&M had a tough time generating offense late. Greco doubled with two outs in the 11th but was left stranded. Laskofski would get to third base in the 12th but the Tribe couldn't bring him home.

In the bottom of the 12th, Duke's Noah Murray delivered the game-winning RBI single. Ryan Calvert was the winning pitcher for Duke while Darren Osborne took a tough-luck loss for the Tribe.
