Women's Tennis Suffers Senior Day Setback to Richmond

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis celebrated its seniors in their final career home match on Saturday afternoon at Mackesy Tennis Center. Unfortunately, Richmond played the spoiler, topping the Tribe, 5-2, to snap the Green and Gold's seven-match win streak.

Prior to the contest, the Tribe (13-3) honored its four-member senior class of Alessandra Anghel, Emma Fernald, Hedda Gurholt, and Ine Stange for their contributions to the program, including leading W&M to the last three CAA Championships.

Gurholt (No. 1) and Fernald (No. 6) each picked up singles wins in their final matches at the Mackesy Tennis Center to lead the way.

How It Happened
- The Tribe's No. 2 doubles team of Anghel and sophomore Francesca Davis won its fifth-straight match, but Richmond (9-6) took the early 1-0 lead by claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
- Anghel and Davis ran their impressive dual-match ledger to 12-1 at No. 2, topping Elizabeth Novak and Sofia Barbulescu, 6-3. The Spiders won in a tiebreaker on line three to claim the initial point of the match.
- After the visitor increased its lead to 3-0 with straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5, Gurholt got the Tribe on the board with a victory at No. 1. The Tribe senior downed Sofia Barbulescu, 7-5, 6-4, for her 11th win of the season at No. 1. It also marked Gurholt's 89th career singles win, which moved her into the top 15 in school history for singles victories.
- The three remaining matches at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 all went to three sets. Unfortunately, with the Tribe needing all three wins to pull out the team victory, Richmond secure the team triumph with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
- Fernald picked up a three-set win at No. 6, her seventh win in a row. She downed Abby Lee in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-5, to improve to 11-2 overall and 5-0 on line six.
