Women's Tennis Posts Trio of Singles Win in Close 4-3 Setback at #47 Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – William & Mary women's tennis won three of the top four singles matches, but No. 47 Charlotte held on for a 4-3 win at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
 
Senior Hedda Gurholt became the 14th player in W&M (13-4) history to win 90 career singles matches with victory at No. 1. Fellow seniors Alessandra Anghel and Ine Stange posted come-from-behind three-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, in the match.
 
Charlotte (19-4) took the initial point and a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The point came down to the No. 3 spot where the 49er pair of Sara Suchankova and Yelyzave Chainykova edged senior Emma Fernald and junior Emma Pell, 6-4. At No. 1, the Tribe pair of Gurholt and Stange were locked into a 5-all match with Lucia Aranda and Prisca Abbas when it was abandoned.
 
In singles, Gurholt took the opening set from Suchankova in convincing fashion, 6-1, at the top spot. The second went into a tiebreaker with Gurholt holding on for a 7-6 (6) victory to secure W&M's first point of the match. The Tribe senior won her 18th match of the season and improved to 12-5 at No. 1 with her second-straight win. It was marked her 60th career win in dual-match action.
 
The 49ers picked up straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to cement in the team triumph for the home team.
 
Anghel dropped the opening set by a 7-5 scoreline after Ni Xi won the final three games of the set. The Tribe senior answered with a 6-2 victory in the second and notched her 21st win of the season behind a 10-5 super tiebreaker win in the third. Anghel moved to 13-4 at No. 2.
 
Stange rounded out the Tribe's performance with a comeback win at No. 4. After dropping he opening set to Shona Nakano, 6-4, she tallied a 6-2 win in the second to pull even. With the third-set super tiebreaker even at nine, Stange claimed the final two points to secure the 11-9 victory. It was her 18th win of the year as she improved to 10-3 on line four.
 
Up Next
The Tribe wraps up the regular season when it travels to Elon on Saturday, April 19. The match carries an 11 a.m. start time from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
