Offense Homers Four Times in 13-12 Win Over Elon

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The William & Mary offense homered four times and staved off a late Elon rally as they took down the Phoenix 13-12 on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe (12-18, 6-2 CAA) won their fifth straight CAA game and clinched the series in the process.

HOW IT HAPPENED
W&M struck first in the bottom of the second inning when right fielder Charlie Iriotakis singled in Derek Holmes for a 1-0 lead.

RHP Nick Lottchea held the Phoenix (10-20, 2-6) scoreless for the first two innings before the visitors struck for six runs in the top of the third.

The Tribe had an answer when DH Christian Rush and first baseman Anthony Greco hit back-to-back home runs — Rush's homer of the two-run variety — cutting the deficit to 6-4.

Both teams scored a single run in the fourth inning. In the home half of the frame, Rush delivered at the plate again when he hit an RBI double to drive in Ben Parker.

Elon would score two runs in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. The Tribe got back in the game with their power bats, as third baseman Jamie Laskofski led off the inning with a triple before a two-run blast by Iriotakis brought him home.

Catcher Witt Scafidi blasted a solo shot in the next at-bat, giving the Tribe back-to-back jacks for the second time in the contest to make the score 9-8.

William & Mary finally took the lead with three runs in the sixth. Laskofski tied the game with an RBI single. Iriotakis then knocked a base hit to left center for a 10-9 lead before Scafidi provided some insurance with another RBI single. The Tribe hit run-scoring singles in three consecutive plate appearances.

RHP Zach Boyd entered the game in the seventh and promptly shut down the Phoenix over the next two frames, retiring six of seven batters.

W&M added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh when Rush tripled to score Lucas Carmichael. Greco then added a sacrifice fly to put the Tribe ahead 13-9.

Rush finished the day 3-for-4 and was a single shy of the cycle. He added three runs and four RBI.

In the ninth, Elon rallied to make it a ballgame. The Phoenix scored twice as RHP Tyler Kelly came in to relieve. With two outs and two runners on, Elon's Charlie Granatell hit a double down the left field line. The would-be tying run was tagged out at the plate by Scafidi on a relay from left field to third base to home.

The Tribe survived for a 13-12 win as Kelly earned the save. Connor Kolarov was the winning pitcher as he tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Itai Spinoza was credited with the loss for Elon.
