STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Starter
Zach Boyd threw a complete-game shutout, while center fielder
Ben Parker added a grand slam, as William & Mary run-ruled Stony Brook by a 15-0 final at Joe Nathan Field on Saturday afternoon.
The victory marked the fifth straight win for the Tribe (18-24, 11-6 CAA), who collected 14 hits and posted its first shutout of the season. The right-hander Boyd was dominant, holding Stony Brook (21-18, 8-8) to just three hits and no walks while striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Third baseman Jamie Laskofski gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead in the first when he hit an RBI triple to score Parker from second.
Boyd got to work quickly in the bottom of the first, setting down the Seawolves in order.
Parker doubled his team's advantage in the second with an RBI double. That extended his hitting streak 28 games. In the home half of the frame, Boyd shut down Stony Brook again with a three-up, three down inning that included a strikeout.
In the third, first baseman Anthony Greco singled in a pair of runs to give W&M a 4-0 lead.
Boyd would surrender his first baserunner in the third, but worked around it as he retired the next two batters in succession. In the fourth, the freshman stranded a runner at second with a flyout to right field, aided by a diving catch from right fielder Christian Rush.
William & Mary extended their lead to 7-0 in the fifth when left fielder Lucas Carmichael smacked a three-run homer down the right field line. For Carmichael, it marked his second straight game with a home run, and gave him 10 roundtrippers in the last 19 games.
Boyd faced the minimum again in the fifth.
The Tribe broke the game open in the top of the sixth. The scoring got started by DH Charlie Iriotakis' RBI single. Catcher Charlie Felmlee followed up with another bases-loaded RBI knock, before shortstop Owen Wilson drew a walk to drive in another that made it 10-0.
After a Stony Brook pitching change, Parker cleared the bags with a grand slam to left field, putting W&M ahead 14-0.
Parker went 3-for-4 with five RBI and three extra-base hits on the day. He was on base five times, adding a pair of walks and scoring three times.
The Tribe added one more run in the seventh when Iriotakis scored on a wild pitch.
Boyd shut down Stony Brook from there, posting a scoreless sixth and seventh, including all three outs via strikeout in the final inning. Boyd was the winning pitcher while Seawolves' starter Ty Panariello took the loss.
