GREENVILLE, N.C. – The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its non-conference slate with a narrow 14-13 setback at ECU on Tuesday evening.
W&M (5-10) rallied back from a five-goal deficit in the second half and took a 12-11 lead with 10:11 remaining following an impressive 6-0 run that was punctuated with back-to-back goals by
Margaret Mooney.
Although ECU (7-8) briefly reclaimed the lead with consecutive goals by Erin Gulden, the Tribe knotted the score at 13-13 on an equalizer by
Finley Hoffman off an assist by
Ainsley Huizenga with 2:50 remaining.
However, Rachel Chessock's goal with 2:12 on the clock proved to be the game-winner, as W&M won the ensuing draw but Gilbert's attempt on goal was high and the Tribe then committed a turnover.
The matchup was tightly contested early as the teams were tied at 4-4 early in the second quarter, but ECU utilized a 4-0 run to build an 8-4 cushion with 4:29 left in the opening half.
Although W&M closed the first half with scores by
Paige Gilbert and
Anna Dawson that narrowed the margin to just two at halftime, the Pirates opened the third quarter with three unanswered goals to build their biggest lead of the game at 11-6 midway through the third frame.
In addition to Mooney's pair of goals, Dawson, Hoffman, Huizenga and Gilbert also found the back of the cage during W&M's 6-0 run late in the contest.
Gilbert led the Tribe with four goals, four draw controls, four ground balls and a caused turnover, while Hoffman (3g) and Dawson (3g) both recorded hat tricks. It was Gilbert's seventh hat trick this season and her third in the last four games, while it marked the sixth time this season Dawson has scored at least three goals.
Mooney (2g, 1a) and Huizenga (1g, 2a) added three points apiece.
Kate Draddy also came up big with a team-high five draw controls, two caused turnovers and a ground ball, while
Claire Doto posted three draw controls with a caused turnover and a ground ball.
ECU outshot W&M, 27-26, but the Tribe put one more shot on goal (23-22).
The Tribe also owned a 16-14 edge in draw controls, which included a 10-4 margin in the second half, and recorded 10 more ground balls than the Pirates (19-9).
Both teams committed 15 turnovers apiece.
Kayla Wilkes led ECU with seven points (5g, 2a) and four draw controls, while Gulden totaled five points (2g, 3a).
W&M will conclude its season when it hosts Campbell for Senior Day at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday at noon.
