Baseball Takes Down Campbell 15-14 in Extra-Innings Thriller

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Trailing by as many as five runs, the William & Mary baseball team staged an improbable comeback capped off by a game-winning RBI single from Derek Holmes as they took down Campbell 15-14 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe (15-24, 9-6 CAA) trailed by three runs in the ninth and two in the 10th but managed to stave off elimination by scoring three runs in each frame. Holmes went 3-for-7 with three RBI in the win, while left fielder Lucas Carmichael and shortstop Owen Wilson both had four-hit outings as W&M won the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Fighting Camels (16-23, 7-8 CAA) opened the scoring in the first with a groundout that scored a run. The visitors would extend their lead in the top of the second when Seth Farni hit a grand slam for a 5-0 lead.

William & Mary was held hitless in the first two innings before exploding through in the third. After the Tribe loaded the bases, third baseman Jamie Laskofski drove in his team's first runs with a two-RBI single.

The second baseman Holmes followed up with an RBI double to make it 5-3. Following a walk to Anthony Greco, DH Charlie Iriotakis tied the contest with a single that plated two runs. It was part of a stretch that saw the first seven batters of the inning reach base safely.

RHP Daniel Lingle entered the contest in the second inning and got seven straight outs. Lingle would go 2 ⅔ innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Tribe took the lead when Laskofski avoided getting tagged out in a rundown and stole second, allowing Carmichael to swipe third and steal home on the same play.

Campbell retook the advantage in the top of the fifth with six runs. LHP Ryan Feczko provided some relief for the bullpen, delivering shutout innings in the sixth and seventh.

The Tribe crept its way back in the ballgame with a three-spot in the seventh. Wilson laced a two-run double into the right center field gap to trim the deficit to 11-8. Carmichael would add another run on a sacrifice fly.

In between the scoring, center fielder Ben Parker hit a single to extend his hitting streak to 25 games.

W&M staged a rally in the ninth. With two runners on, Laskofski drilled a double to left center that cut the deficit to 12-10. Holmes then singled in Christian Rush for an RBI, followed by a sacrifice fly from Greco that tied the game at 12-all.

RHP Tyler Kelly finished out regulation, going 1 ⅔ innings with two strikeouts.

Campbell went ahead 14-12 in the top of the 10th. In a common refrain, the Tribe mounted a furious comeback. Wilson started it with a leadoff single, followed in succession by a Carmichael hit by pitch and a Rush RBI single.

After Carmichael scored on a wild pitch, Holmes delivered the final blow with a single down the left field line that allowed to score, capping off the 15-14 victory.

RHP Noah Hertzler was the winner, recording two outs in the 10th. Bryce Schares took the loss for Campbell.
