Tribe Drops Series Finale at UNCW, 8-4

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The William & Mary baseball was unable to keep up with the UNCW offense as they fell to the Seahawks 8-4 on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field, dropping the series.

The Tribe (13-22, 7-5 CAA) saw home runs from center fielder Ben Parker and left fielder Lucas Carmichael, who both extended their hitting streaks to 21 games. Third baseman Jamie Laskofski went 2-for-4 with a run. As a team, W&M was held to just six hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seahawks (17-19, 5-7) opened the scoring in the first with a two-run RBI single. Offensively, the Tribe went down in order through the first two frames.

That changed in the third when catcher Jerry Barnes III legged out an infield single to third. Two at-bats later, Parker homered to right center to tie the game at 2-2.

The visitors weren't done. After a single by Laskofski, Carmichael went deep for a two-run blast, giving the Tribe four runs in the frame as they went ahead 4-2.

In the third, UNCW trimmed the lead in half when they scored on a bases-loaded ground ball double play. However, RHP Daniel Lingle was able to minimize the damage as he got a strikeout to end the inning.

The Seahawks tied the contest in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Still, Lingle worked out of a jam with two runners in scoring position as he got a punchout to retire the side.

W&M was unable to do much with the bats in the latter part of the contest. UNCW went ahead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Tanner Thach that made it 6-4.

The home team would add to their advantage with another two-run shot in the seventh, making it 8-4. W&M was held to just one hit over the final four innings.

Cam Bagwell was the winning pitcher for UNCW. RHP Connor Kolarov took the loss for the Tribe.

STAT NUGGETS
  • Parker and Carmichael's 21-game hitting streaks are tied for the third-longest in W&M records since at least 2004, equaling Mike Decarlo's streak from April 8-May 18, 2005.
  • Lingle went 2 ⅔ innings, tallying three strikeouts.
  • RHP Noah Hertzler tossed a scoreless eighth inning, fanning one.
