Carmichael’s Two Homers Not Enough as Tribe Falls to Longwood 8-6

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Lucas Carmichael hit two home runs but his efforts were not enough as William & Mary fell to Longwood 8-6 on Tuesday evening at Plumeri Park.

Carmichael was the star of the Tribe offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBI. Center fielder Ben Parker added two hits and scored twice.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tribe (13-23) got to work with the bats immediately when Parker led off the game with a single. In the next at-bat, Carmichael deposited the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a two-run homer. Both batters extended their respective hitting streaks to 22 games in the process.

W&M added one more in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by shortstop Owen Wilson.

Tribe starter Reed Interdonato stranded a pair of runners on base in a scoreless first two innings. Longwood (10-27) got on the board in the third after a successful double steal of second and home, making it 3-1 in favor of the home team.

After Interdonato departed, the Lancers would tie the game with two runs in the fourth. The tie was short-lived, however, as Carmichael blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put W&M ahead 6-3.

Longwood got one back in the fifth with a bases-loaded RBI single. Reliever Phin Scott was able to limit the damage, getting consecutive outs with the bags full to keep the lead at 6-4.

The visitors cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth with a run, then took the lead with three more in the seventh. W&M got two runners on in the sixth via walks but could do no damage.

The Green & Gold's bullpen carried them in the late innings with scoreless appearances from LHP Chad Yates and RHP Tyler Kelly. However, the offense could not sustain a rally as they went scoreless over the final five frames.

Joe Castrichini was the winning pitcher for Longwood while Isaiah Brewington picked up a save. W&M's Darren Osborne was charged with the loss.
