Women's Tennis Drops Close Regular-Season Finale at Elon

ELON, N.C. – William & Mary women's tennis closed out the regular season with narrow 4-3 loss at Elon on Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Senior Hedda Gurholt, junior Sia Chaudry, and freshman Mira Kernagis tallied singles wins for the Tribe (13-5) in a match-up between two of the CAA's top teams. The setback snapped W&M's  28-match winning streak against CAA competition, the second-longest in school history.

Despite senior Alessandra Anghel and sophomore Francesca Davis's 6-2 win on court two in doubles, Elon (17-5) clinched the initial point of the match with a pair of close 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 to take an early 1-0 lead. Anghel and Davis improved to 15-3 overall and 13-2 at No. 2 with the win.

Kernagis pulled the Tribe even at one with a singles win on court six. The Tribe rookie defeated Lisa Kranec in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to 18-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Gurholt put the Tribe on top for the first time with a straight-sets win at No. 1. The two-time CAA Player of the Year tallied her 91st career win, topping Simone Bergeron, 6-3, 6-2, at the top spot to give the Tribe a 2-1 lead. Gurholt wrapped up the regular season undefeated in conference play at 5-0. She extend her win streak to three matches and upped her mark to 19-13 overall.

Elon bounced back with singles wins on courts 2, 4, and 5 to claim the team victory.

With the Phoenix leading 3-2, the match came down to three-set tilts at No. 2 and No. 3. Chaudry bounced back from dropping the opening set by claiming the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), to pull even with Helen Sarikulaya. The Tribe junior won a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-7, on line three for her 12th win of the year. She improved to 4-1 in CAA play.

Unfortunately at No. 2, Elon's Mariana Reding rallied from a set deficit to knock off Anghel in three sets and secure the team victory.
