FARMVILLE, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three games with a 16-8 victory at Longwood on Saturday afternoon.
Although W&M (4-3) led by just one late in the first half, it rattled off four unanswered goals during a 7 1/2-minute stretch that spanned the second and third quarters to build an 8-3 advantage.
After Longwood (0-6) narrowed the margin to four on multiple occasions during the third frame, the Tribe opened the fourth quarter with a 5-1 run en route to securing the non-conference road victory.
With the triumph, W&M improves to 3-1 on the road this season and is averaging 17.0 goals per game during its current winning streak.
Paige Gilbert (4g, 1a, 5dc) and
Kate Draddy (4g, 1a, 5dc) led the Tribe with five points apiece and combined for 11 of the Tribe's 16 draw controls. Gilbert's four goals came on just five shots, while Draddy needed just six attempts for her four goals.
Anna Dawson and
Finley Hoffman also came up big offensively with three goals apiece, which marked Dawson's third-consecutive hat trick. Dawson added a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Hoffman's stat line included three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
W&M outshot LU, 30-18, which included a 27-13 advantage in attempts on goal. It marked the third straight game in which the Tribe has shot better than 50 percent as a team, as it owns an 58.6 shooting percentage during the recent stretch.
W&M also earned advantages in draw controls (16-11) and ground balls (17-15), while it committed four fewer turnovers (15-19).
Ellie Rumbaugh and Madison Rogers led Longwood with two goals apiece, while Miranda Helfenbein posted team highs in draw controls (4) and caused turnovers (2).
The Tribe will return to action when it opens its conference slate at No. 25 Drexel next Friday at 1 p.m.
