Lax’s Winning Streak Snapped in CAA Opener at No. 23 Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The William & Mary lacrosse team's three-game winning streak was snapped with a 21-11 setback at No. 23 Drexel in its CAA opener on Friday afternoon.
 
W&M (4-4, 0-1) trailed by just one, 4-3, late in the first quarter, but Drexel (6-2, 1-0) broke the game open with eight unanswered goals.
 
The Tribe briefly narrowed the margin to 12-5 following scores by Anna Dawson and Ainsley Huizenga midway through the second quarter, but DU countered with a 4-0 spurt to extend its lead to 11.
 
W&M cut the gap to seven on multiple occasions down the stretch but was unable to get any closer as Drexel extended its winning streak to five games.
 
Paige Gilbert (4g) and Huizenga (3g, 1a) led the Green & Gold with four points apiece, while Gilbert also added two draw controls and two ground balls.
 
Kate Draddy found the back of the cage twice and posted a career-high seven ground balls with a draw control.
 
Goalie Marin Wilhelm tallied 10 saves with five ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
Although Drexel outshot W&M, 40-21, which included a 31-18 margin on goal, the Tribe shot 52.3 percent – marking the fourth consecutive game in which it has shot better than 50 percent.
 
The Dragons owned a 24-9 advantage in draw controls and secured three more ground balls than W&M (28-25). Additionally, DU committed threw fewer turnovers than the Tribe (10-13).
 
Anna Maria Gragnani and Allison Drake led Drexel with six goals apiece, while Gragnani added 15 draw controls and three ground balls.
 
Bea Buckley added six points (2g, 4a), while Katie Maloney recorded a game-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls.  
 
W&M will return to action when it opens its home conference slate against Hofstra at Martin Family Stadium next Friday at 5 p.m.
