Baseball Drops 4-2 Decision to Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The William & Mary baseball team dropped the series opener to Kansas State 4-2 on Friday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.

Right fielder Christian Rush went 2-for-4 with a run and a double in the loss. Catcher Jerry Barnes III was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk and threw out four runners on the basepaths.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After allowing three earned runs over the first two frames, William & Mary starter Carter Lovasz posted a scoreless third inning. The righty stranded two runners on base, getting help from the catcher Barnes, who erased a leadoff walk by throwing out KSU's Kyan Lodice stealing second.

The Tribe (4-9) got on the board in the fourth thanks to a two-run double by Barnes that made it a 3-2 ballgame. The scoring opportunity was set up by a one-out walk to DH Anthony Greco and a double from Rush.

Lovasz faced the minimum in the fourth and did not allow a run the rest of the way, holding Kansas State (7-5) to just two hits. His final line was three runs over five innings, striking out three.

RHP Owen Pierce entered in the sixth to relieve. After walking a pair, Barnes came through again by nabbing a runner at third base on a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play.

W&M did get a runner to third with one out in the top of the seventh in the form of Owen Wilson, but the Tribe was unable to drive him home.

The Wildcats tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice groundout for a 4-2 lead. Barnes again negated the threat, tagging out a runner attempting to steal home on a rundown, with an assist from first baseman Derek Holmes.

Pierce finished the game for the Tribe, striking four batters, including three in a scoreless eighth inning.

The visitors got the winning run to the plate after drawing two walks but could not cash in. Blake Dean earned a seven-out save for KSU while Ty Ruhl was credited with the win.

Lovasz was tabbed with the loss for the Tribe.

STAT NUGGETS
  • W&M's pitching staff held KSU to one run over the final six innings.
  • The four runners caught stealing by Barnes were the first of his career.
