Tribe Overpowered by No. 9 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The ninth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers used a 10-run third inning to take down William & Mary 15-4 at Disharoon Park on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tribe starter Chad Yates tossed a scoreless first inning, after which the Cavaliers (8-3) struck for five runs in the second.

William & Mary (4-8) responded with four runs in the third. After second baseman Kevin Francella reached on an error, center fielder Ben Parker drove in the Tribe's first run with an RBI triple to straightaway center.

Right fielder Christian Rush further cut into the deficit with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, making it 5-2. That was followed by consecutive RBI singles from third baseman Derek Holmes and Charlie Iriotakis that got the Tribe to within one run.

UVA regained control with a 10-spot in the bottom half of the inning as their lead ballooned to 15-4.

RHP Darren Osborne was able to settle in, getting help from catcher Witt Scafidi, who threw out a runner at second to end the frame. Osborne then put up a zero in the fourth. RHP Tyler Kelly followed with two shutout frames in the fifth and sixth innings, allowing just one hit. The freshman registered his first scoreless appearance.

Seven different Tribe players recorded a hit in the loss.
