STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 19 Stony Brook, 20-3, on Sunday afternoon.
W&M (5-6, 1-3) got on the scoreboard first when
Sophia Chiodo Ortiz found the back of the cage off an assist from
Paige Gilbert less than two minutes into the contest, but SBU (8-3, 3-0) outscored the Tribe, 11-2, during the remainder of the half.
The Seawolves held W&M scoreless during the second half en route to securing the conference victory.
Gilbert led the Tribe with two points (1g, 1a) and a team-high six draw controls, while Chiodo Ortiz and
Ainsley Huizenga also recorded goals for W&M.
Finley Hoffman (2ct, 3gb),
Kate Draddy (2ct, 2gb) and
Jaylin Locke (2ct, 1gb) led the Tribe defensively, while
Sophie Busam added a caused turnover and a team-high five ground balls.
SBU outshot W&M, 44-12, which included a 28-10 margin on goal.
The Seawolves also owned advantages in draw controls (15-11) and ground balls (25-16), while they committed nine fewer turnovers (17-26).
Charlotte Wilmoth (5g, 1a) and Isabella Caporuscio (3g, 3a) led SBU with six points apiece, while Riley McDonald (3g, 2a) and Casey Colbert (2g, 3a) both added five points. Braeden Siverson totaled a game-high 11 draw controls.
W&M will return to action when it continues its conference slate at Towson next Saturday at noon.
