Greco Clutch Again as Late RBI Beats Hofstra

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — For the second straight game, a go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning from Anthony Greco proved the difference as the William & Mary baseball team took down Hofstra 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park en route to a series win.

The Tribe (9-17, 3-2 CAA) staved off a late Hofstra rally thanks to a collective pitching effort that saw five arms hold the Pride to six hits on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
W&M starter Zach Boyd faced the minimum in the first inning, recording three flyball outs. In the bottom of the first, center fielder Ben Parker led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, though he was later erased on a caught stealing.

Boyd worked his way out of a jam in the second. With two runners on base and one out, he got a flyout and a groundout in succession to erase the threat.

The Tribe would take the lead in the home half of the second on a solo homer by left fielder Lucas Carmichael, his third roundtripper in the last four games.

Right fielder Christian Rush would double the Tribe's lead in the third with an RBI single that drove in Jerry Barnes III. Rush went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.

Hofstra (10-16, 2-3) went down in order in the third. Boyd was unblemished in his start, going three shutout innings with just one hit. Seven of his nine outs were fly balls.

LHP Chad Yates took over in the fourth inning. The sophomore worked around a leadoff walk, stranding a runner at second to put up a zero.

In the fifth, RHP Daniel Lingle helped the Tribe escape a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam unharmed. Lingle got his first batter to ground into a fielder's choice out at home. He then got help from his defense as the first baseman Greco and catcher Barnes turned a 3-2-3 double play to end the inning.

RHP Owen Pierce was called on in the sixth. The senior also left the bags full, getting a bases-loaded strikeout with two outs to keep Hofstra scoreless. All three outs in the inning were via the punchout.

Third baseman Jamie Laskofski produced a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to extend the W&M lead to 3-0.

Hofstra got on the board in the seventh when they struck for three runs to tie the game. The scoring settled down until the bottom of the eighth when shortstop Owen Wilson got aboard with a one-out single.

After a walk to Parker, Greco came through with the go-ahead RBI single to put the Tribe ahead 4-3.

RHP Reed Interdonato would shut the door, setting down the Pride in the ninth to earn the win. Tanner Sanderoff took the loss for Hofstra.
