Women's Tennis Rolls to Seventh-Straight Victory over VCU

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis won its seventh straight match, rolling past VCU, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
 
The Tribe (13-2) clinched the doubles point on court 3 through a comeback win from the CAA doubles team of the week, Mira Kernagis and Emma Fernald. W&M won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, including the clincher from sophomore Francesca Davis, to top the Rams.
 
How It Happened
- W&M kicked off doubles with a definitive 6-2 victory by senior Alessandra Anghel and Davis over Sofia Jane Thorne and Lea Malazdra at No. 2. The pair ran its record to 13-2 with its fourth-straight win.
- After a VCU (7-8) win at the top doubles position, Fernald and Kernagis clinched the point for the third-straight match win a come-from-behind win at No. 3. Trailing 5-1 in the tiebreaker, the duo won seven of the final eight points to knock off Yelizaveta Karlova and Andrea Magallanes, 7-6 (6). The duo won its sixth in a row and improved to 12-6 overall.
- The Rams pulled even with a victory at No. 1 before the Tribe won the remaining five matches in straight sets. Anghel answered with a comfortable, 6-3, 6-0, win over Mariam Ibrahim on court 2. The Tribe senior won her 20th singles match of the season and extended her win streak to seven.
- Kernagis followed with another straight-set victory, 6-3, 6-4, over Yelizaveta Karlova at the No. 5 spot. Kernagis logged her second win playing at No. 5 and upped her mark to 17-7 on the year.
- Davis clinched the match for the Tribe with her team-leading 22nd win of the year. She downed Lea Malazdra 7-5, 6-1 on court 4 to move to 3-0 at the No. 4.
- Playing at No. 6, Fernald extended W&M's lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sara Alba. She advanced to 10-2 overall and also remained undefeated at the No. 6 spot with a 4-0 record this year.
- Senior Ine Stange rounded out the Tribe's 6-1 victory with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Andrea Magallanes. Stange. She pushed her win streak to seven matches and improved to 17-10 on the season.
 
Up Next
The Tribe wraps up its home slate on Saturday, April 5, when it hosts Richmond at 2 p.m. at the Mackesy Tennis Center. It will be Senior Day, and the program will honor its senior quartet of Alessandra Anghel, Emma Fernald, Hedda Gurholt, and Ine Stange.
