Women's Tennis Continues Winning Way with 5-2 Victory over Charleston

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis continued its winning form with a 5-2 victory over CAA opponent Charleston on Saturday afternoon at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
 
The Tribe (12-2) started the match by sweeping doubles to obtain a 1-0 advantage.  W&M then captured singles wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 with a clinching win from senior Alessandra Anghel on line two.

With the win, W&M extended its streak to six matches in a row. The Tribe has also won 28 consecutive matches against CAA opponents.
 
How It Happened
- W&M's No.2 doubles team of Anghel and sophomore Francesca Davis recorded the first Tribe win, 6-2, over Oziera Ahmad and Maja Jekauc. The pairing won for the third-straight match and advanced its record to 13-2 overall, including 10-1 on line two.
- The clinching doubles win came on court 3 with senior Emma Fernald and freshman Mira Kernagis defeating Charleston's Mckenzie Daniel and Jaiden McKee, 6-2. Kernagis and Fernald extended their five-match win streak and improved to 11-6 on the year.
- The Tribe's No. 1 doubles team of seniors Hedda Gurholt and Ine Stange closed out doubles play with a 6-4 win over Sia Cariov and Francesca Salvato. The pairing improved to 9-5 at the top spot.
- As a team, the Tribe is 12-0 in doubles action in CAA play. Saturday marked the 12th time in 14 matches that W&M won the doubles point.
- The reigning CAA Player of the Week Gurholt kicked off singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Charleston's Maja Jekauc at No. 1. Gurholt remained undefeated in conference matches and picked up her 10th at the top spot.
- Kernagis upped the Tribe lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Isabella De Luise at the No. 6 spot. Kernagis recorded her eighth win in dual match competition and advances to 16-7 overall
- Anghel clinched the win for W&M with her on court two, topping Francesca Salvato 6-4, 6-2. The senior improves to 19-8 overall with her sixth win in a row.
- Stange rounded out the Tribe victory with a comeback victory at No. 4, defeating Sia Cariov 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, in a close tiebreaker to win the match. Stange, like Anghel, won her sixth match in a row and advances to 16-10 overall
 
Up Next
The Tribe returns next week to face VCU on Friday, March 28, at 1 p.m. at the Mackesy Tennis Center, weather permitting.
