Offense Pounds Out 23 Hits in Win over N.C. A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Posting the highest hit total in two years, the William & Mary baseball team won a high-scoring affair as they took down North Carolina A&T 18-13 at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon to pick up their first league win.

The Tribe (7-16, 1-1 CAA) had five different players record three or more hits, totaling 23 for the day. DH Lucas Carmichael went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI, including his first career home run. Right fielder Charlie Iriotakis was 4-for-6 at the dish with five RBI, finishing a double shy of the cycle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring started in the first inning when Carmichael hit an RBI single to drive in Ben Parker, who reached via a leadoff base hit.

After a Derek Holmes single, third baseman Jamie Laskofski hit a sacrifice fly to left field for a 2-0 Tribe lead. Laskofski also had a three-hit day, scoring four times and driving in three runs.

N.C. A&T (5-15, 1-1) had the response with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, one of which was unearned.

The teams traded blows in the early innings, with first baseman Anthony Greco putting W&M ahead 4-2 on a two-run homer that scored Parker. The visitors tacked on three more in the third inning, beginning with RBI doubles by Laskofski and catcher Charlie Felmlee.

With two outs and runners on, Greco came up clutch again, delivering an RBI single to drive Felmlee home for a 7-2 lead. Greco collected three RBI and scored three times on the day's action.

The Aggies cut into the deficit in the home half of the third when Jason Campo hit a three-run blast to make it 7-5.

W&M retaliated in the fourth. Following a double by Holmes, Iriotakis laced a run-scoring triple to left center. It was his team-leading third triple of the season.

The Tribe wore down the Aggies' pitching staff in the middle innings, bursting through for five runs in the fifth. Carmichael got the line moving with a two-RBI single, followed by an RBI base hit from Holmes that stretched the lead to 11-7. Iriotakis then singled in another run, and a double-steal attempt allowed Laskosfki to score the Tribe's 13th run.

A&T cut the lead to one with a three-run homer in the ensuing half-inning. After a scoreless sixth, Laskofski singled Carmichael home, immediately before Iriotakis launched a two-run shot over the right-field wall for a 16-10 lead.

RHP Owen Pierce bridged the gap from the early to late innings, going 3 ⅔ frames with four strikeouts. RHP Tyler Kelly tossed a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one.

In the top of the ninth, Carmichael went deep for his first career home run, a solo shot to right field. Iriotakis would add an RBI single for his fifth RBI, extending the lead to 18-12.

Kelly finished the game in the ninth and earned the win. Starter Matt Murtagh was the loser for N.C. A&T.
