Tribe Rally Falls Short as N.C. A&T Takes Series Finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The William & Mary baseball rallied from a six-run deficit but couldn't keep up with the North Carolina A&T offense as they dropped the rubber match of the series 13-7 on Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
N.C. A&T (6-15, 2-1 CAA) took an early lead on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first.

The Tribe (7-17, 1-2) got two runners on in the second inning, but failed to score for the first three frames. Their fortunes changed in the fourth when right fielder Lucas Carmichael led off with a solo home run, his second homer in as many games, to trim the A&T lead to 2-1.

The Aggies responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, collecting four hits and taking advantage of two Tribe errors.

In the fifth inning, after a pair of walks, second baseman Derek Holmes roped a double down the left field to drive in two runs, cutting the deficit to 7-3. In the ensuing at-bat, Carmichael singled to right center for an RBI that scored Holmes, making it 7-4.

Carmichael was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

RHP Chad Yates took the mound in the bottom of the fourth and got the last out of the inning. He followed up with a three-up, three-down fifth inning.

W&M tied the game in the sixth when center fielder Ben Parker launched a three-run blast to left center. In the home half of the frame, Yates delivered another shutout inning, notching a pair of strikeouts.

Holmes led off the seventh with a double but was stranded at second. The Aggies took control in the bottom of the seventh, striking for six runs.

The Tribe had no more offense left as they went down scoreless in the eighth and ninth.

Diego Barrett got the win for A&T while Yates was charged with the loss.
