Baseball Edged by Penn State 7-6 in Weekend Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The William & Mary baseball team rallied twice to tie the game but was unable to hold on late as they fell to Penn State 7-6 in the finale of the Central Virginia Classic on Sunday at Plumeri Park.

Shortstop Jamie Laskofski had a career day, going 4-for-5 with two runs. Third baseman Derek Holmes went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. The Tribe (4-7) scratched out 13 hits but were hurt by 14 runners left on base.

HOW IT HAPPENED
W&M put up a three-spot in the first inning, starting with a leadoff single by shortstop Jamie Laskofski. After a walk, DH Anthony Greco poked an RBI single to center field for the first run of the game.

Two at-bats later, Holmes drove in a pair of runs on a single to give the Tribe a 3-0 lead.

Penn State (8-1) responded in the ensuing half-inning with three runs, one of which was unearned. Both starters settled in after that, pitching scoreless frames in the third and fourth.

The Nittany Lions took their first lead in the fifth with a two-spot. W&M chipped away as Holmes came through again with an RBI base hit that trimmed the deficit to 5-4. Holmes got on base four times in total.

In the sixth, left fielder Lucas Carmichael tied the game again with an RBI single that drove in Laskofski.

The Nittany Lions reclaimed the advantage with a single run in the top of the seventh. In the home half of the inning, after right fielder Christian Rush reached on a throwing error and advanced to third on a wild pitch, first baseman Charlie Iriotakis knotted the game at 6-all with an RBI single.

W&M had the bases loaded with two outs but was unable to do any further damage.

PSU went ahead in the ninth on an unearned run that scored via wild pitch. Their pitching staff shut the door in the ninth as Diamond Loosli went two scoreless innings for the win.

Owen Pierce took the loss for William & Mary, going 3.2 innings with one earned run allowed and six punchouts.
