Tribe Falls Short in High-Scoring Affair to Princeton, 12-11

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The William & Mary baseball out-hit Princeton 16-12 but was hurt by four errors as they fell to the Tigers 12-11 on Tuesday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe (4-12) mashed three home runs, with center fielder Ben Parker, first baseman Anthony Greco, and DH Christian Rush all going yard. Parker had a career-day, going 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI. Greco was perfect at the plate, hitting 3-for-3 and driving in four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams scored twice in the first inning. After falling behind 2-0, Parker had the response, blasting a solo homer to lead off the game. Third baseman Derek Holmes later notched an RBI single, part of a 3-for-4 day for the Kutztown, Pa. native.

W&M scored four more in the second. Parker singled to score second baseman Kevin Francella, followed up by a three-run homer off the bat of Greco for a 6-4 lead.

Princeton (3-9) tied the game with two in the third. The teams went back-and-forth, the Tribe reclaiming the advantage on a Francella RBI single in the third. Greco drove in another run with a base knock in the fourth, giving W&M an 8-6 advantage.

The Tigers fought back with a three-run shot in the fifth inning as they went ahead 9-8.

The scoring quieted down in the middle innings, as RHP Danie Lingle came in to relieve in the sixth and tossed 2.1 scoreless frames. He allowed one hit and struck out a pair.

After right fielder Charlie Iriotakis tied the contest at 9-9 with an RBI single in the eighth, Princeton took the lead for good with three runs in the road half of the ninth.

Rush added a two-run homer to pull the Tribe within one, but they would get no closer.

Jacob Faulkner earned the win for the Tigers while Tom Bourque took the loss for W&M.

  • The four hits for Parker were a career-high.
  • Greco was on base in all five of his plate appearances, adding two walks. He also upped his on-base streak to start the year to 15 games.
  • Francella went 3-for-5, his second career three-hit game.
  • RHP Connor Kolarov got three outs in the ninth inning and allowed no earned runs.
  • RHP Tyler Kelly went 1.1 innings and yielded one unearned run.
  • Holmes has seven hits in his last three games.
