WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis continued its dominance against the CAA, rolling to a 7-0 win over Towson on Saturday afternoon at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
In total, the Tribe (7-2, 2-0) has won 26 straight against CAA competition dating back to 2022, including 17 in a row during the regular season.
The Tribe swept doubles with senior
Alessandra Anghel and sophomore
Francesca Davis clinching the initial point of the match with a win at No. 2. In singles, the Green and Gold won five of the six spots in straight-sets, including the clincher from Anghel at No. 2.
How It Happened
- Senior
Emma Fernald and freshman
Mira Kernagis gave W&M the early lead in doubles against Towson (1-5), topping Ashira Murray and Tamzin Pountney, 6-2, at No. 3. The Tribe pair won its seventh of the year and upped its ledger to 4-3 at No. 3.
- Davis and Anghel ran their win streak to seven matches, downing Gaia Montecchi and Olivia Rothfeld, 6-3, at No. 2. They improved to 6-0 on line two.
- The senior duo of
Hedda Gurholt and
Ine Stange completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over Kiersten Tambe and Chandre Boshoff at the top spot. The Green and Gold pairing moved to 6-3 at No. 1.
- Stange was impressive at No. 4 nearly blanking Murray, 6-1, 6-0, for her 11th singles victory of the season.
- Kernagis quickly increased the Tribe lead to 3-0, dropping only three games in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Boshoff at No. 6. The Green and Gold rookie improved to 13-6 overall and 5-1 on line six.
- Anghel provided the clincher with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Pountney at No. 2. The Tribe senior moved to 14-8 overall and 6-3 at the second spot.
- Junior
Sia Chaudry and Davis notched straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Chaudry defeated Montecchi, 6-4, 6-4, for her ninth win of the year and sixth at No. 3. Davis ran her team-leading singles record to 17-5, including 7-2 in dual-match play, with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Rothfeld on line five.
- Gurholt needed three sets, but rounded out the Tribe sweep with a victory at No. 1. The Tribe senior and Tambe split the opening two sets by matching 6-2 scores, before Gurholt tallied a tiebreaker win in the third, 7-6 (5). She won her 12th match of the season and moved to 6-3 at No. 1.
