Women's Tennis Drops First Match of Season at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis suffered its first loss of the 2025 dual-match campaign, falling to in-state rival and four-time defending Sun Belt Conference Champion Old Dominion, 6-1, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Thursday.

Freshman Mira Kernagis provided W&M (3-1) with its lone victory on the afternoon. The Tribe rookie won her fourth in a row, dropping  just three games in a 6-2, 6-1, victory over ODU's Marina Markina at No. 6. Kernagis upped her season mark to 11-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in dual-match action.

Old Dominion (2-2) opened the match with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to claim the opening point of the contest. No. 6-ranked Sofia Johnson and Victoria Matasova increased the Monarch advantage to 3-0 with straight-set singles wins at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.

After Kernagis's win at No. 6 drew the Tribe within 3-1, ODU's Kira Matushkina notched the clincher, downing Alessandra Anghel at the No. 2 spot.

Junior Sia Chaudry battled at the No. 3 spot, but suffered a narrow setback to Lidiia Rasskouskaia. The players went back and forth into a tiebreaker in the opening set with Rasshouskaia pulling out the victory. Chaudry fought to pull even in the second, but the Monarch player eked out a 7-5 win to round out the ODU victory.
