Women's Tennis Sweeps Longwood for Third-Straight Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis team continued its incredible start to the season with a 7-0 sweep of Longwood on Wednesday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
 
The Tribe clinched the doubles point with wins at No.1 and No. 3, before dominating the singles matches. Without dropping a single set, the team moved to 3-0 on the young season with the commanding win. Seniors Hedda Gurholt and Ine Stange combined to clinch the doubles point with a win the top spot and each tallied singles victories as well in the triumph. Junior Emma Pell also made her season debut in the Tribe lineup, winning at No. 6 singles.
 
How It Happened
- Early breaks for the Tribe pairings of Gurholt and Stange (No. 1) and freshman Mira Kernagis and senior Emma Fernald (No. 3) resulted in W&M comfortably capturing the doubles point. Kernagis and Fernald topped the Longwood (1-3) pairing of Oriana Izarra and Elizaveta Gnilozubova, 6-2, at No. 3 for their third-straight win. The duo improved to 5-3 on the year.
- Gurholt and Stange clinched the initial point of the match with a 6-3 victory over Phoebe Mitchell and Karina Rizvanova. The Tribe seniors upped their season mark to 2-1 at the top spot.
- Senior Alessandra Anghel swept the first set, 6-0, against Longwood's Karina Rizvanova on the way to a straight-sets wins at No. 2. She pushed her record to 10-6 overall with her second-straight win on line two.
- Like Anghel, Pell also swept the first set against her opponent Alexandra Magia,  before nearly pulling it off again winning, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6. Playing her first dual-match of the season, Pell moved to 6-3.
- Sophomore Francesca Davis remained undefeated in dual-match competition, dropping just four games in a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Elizaveta Gnilozubova. She extended her team-best singles ledger to 13-3.
- Senior Hedda Gurholt also increased her winning streak to three matches with a clinical, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Feline van Eijkelenburg at the top spot. The reigning CAA Player of the Week won her ninth singles match of the season.
- At No. 3, junior Sia Chaudry used an early break to take the opening set, 6-3, over Longwood's Oriana Izarra. She tallied a matching 6-3 win in the second to record her fifth singles win of the season.
- Finally, Stange claimed a hard-fought tiebreaker, 7-6 (2), in the opening set and proceeded to take the second, 6-3, against Phoebe Mitchell round out the Tribe sweep. Stange tallied her eight singles victory this year.
