Women's Tennis Drops Home Match to Wake Forest

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis suffered a Sunday afternoon setback to ACC foe Wake Forest, 7-0, at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center, snapping a three-match win streak.
 
At No. 2, senior Alessandra Anghel nearly pulled off her second nationally-ranked win of the year for the Tribe (6-2). She jumped out to a set advantage, winning the first in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6) from No. 95-ranked Krystal Blanch. Anghel jumped out to a break advantage in the second set, but Blanch rallied to take the set, 6-4. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Anghel fought off three match points to draw even at nine, but Blanch claimed the final two points to secure the win.
 
Wake Forest (10-3) took a close doubles point to open the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The visitors clinched the doubles point with Anna Zhang and Whitley Pate edging freshman Mira Kernagis and senior Emma Fernald, 6-4, on court 3. At No. 2, Anghel and sophomore Francesca Davis were tied at four with Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum when the doubles point was decided.
 
The Demon Deacons won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to cement their third-straight victory.
 
Up Next
The Tribe returns to CAA play, hosting Towson on Saturday, March 1, before traveling to Hampton on Wednesday, March 5 for another conference match. The first match will take place at 2:30 p.m. and the Hampton match will happen at 2 p.m.
