Carmichael’s Walk-Off Sparks Doubleheader Sweep of Marist

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A walk-off double from Lucas Carmichael lifted the William & Mary baseball team to a 5-4 win over Marist in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Plumeri Park. The Tribe went on to sweep the twinbill with a 9-6 win in the nightcap.

Right fielder Christian Rush added two home runs in the second game, part of a day that saw him go 3-for-6 with four runs and four RBI.

GAME ONE
Though Carmichael delivered the heroics in the opener, RHP Carter Lovasz was the star of the contest, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings in relief. The senior tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and retired 12 of 13 batters from the sixth to the ninth inning to earn the win.

DH Charlie Iriotakis got the Tribe (3-3) on the board with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

After Marist (0-6) took the lead with three runs in the fifth, W&M responded with a three-spot in the sixth. Rush started the rally with a sac fly before an RBI single by first baseman Anthony Greco and a bases-loaded HBP for catcher Jerry Barnes III evened the score.

That set the stage for the game-winner from Carmichael, who laced a double to right center that brought home CF Ben Parker with the winning run.

RHP Reed Interdonato, making his first start of the year, tallied seven strikeouts across four frames.

Greco went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Parker also had a 2-for-4 day, scoring two runs.

GAME TWO
William & Mary overcame another slow start to win game two. After going down 4-0 in the first two innings, Rush got the Tribe on the board with a solo homer to left field.

The sixth inning proved decisive as W&M struck for four runs to take the lead. Barnes hit an RBI double to left field, followed by a two-run single from third baseman Derek Holmes. Barnes had a three-hit day, going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs.

Shortstop Jamie Laskofski then gave the Tribe its first lead at 5-4 with another sac fly.

Rush wasn't done, homering again in the eighth inning, this time of the two-run variety. The Lackawanna, Pa. native went 3-for-4 with four runs and three driven in.

Second baseman Matthew Kosuda went 2-for-4, adding an RBI single in the seventh.

RHP Owen Pierce shut the door late, earning a nine-out save. He struck out five Red Foxes and surrendered only two unearned runs. W&M got help from a couple freshman bullpen arms in Jack Weight, who went 2.2 scoreless with three punchouts, and Zach Boyd, who recorded two outs in the sixth.

Boyd was the pitcher of record in game two.
