Baseball Drops Midweek Contest to Richmond

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The William & Mary baseball team was unable to overcome five errors as they fell to Richmond 12-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tribe (1-3) got off to another slow start, surrendering two runs in the first inning. W&M did put two runners on in the home half thanks to a Ben Parker walk and Lucas Carmichael single, but both runners were left stranded.

Carmichael was a bright spot, going 2-for-4.

In the third, Richmond (4-0) tacked on a sacrifice fly to go ahead 3-0. Carmichael would add another base knock in the bottom of the inning to put Parker in scoring position, but W&M could get no further.

The Spiders extended the lead in the top of the fifth on the strength of two doubles and a throwing error.

The Tribe finally lit the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI pinch-hit double by Jerry Barnes III. It was set up by a leadoff single from second baseman Matthew Kosuda.

Richmond broke the game open with runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

William & Mary plated two runs in the ninth inning with an RBI groundout off the bat of Derek Holmes and a sacrifice fly from Ethan Rothstein, marking his first career RBI in the green and gold.

Right fielder Christian Rush had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a run.

Glenn Smith earned the win for the Spiders, pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Starter Chad Yates took the loss in his W&M debut and was tagged for three runs.

UP NEXT
