Women's Tennis Soars to CAA-Opening Win over the Seahawks

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis opened CAA play with a 6-1 victory over UNCW on Sunday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
 
The Tribe (5-1, 1-0 CAA) swept all three doubles posts with sophomore Francesca Davis and senior Alessandra Anghel clinching the point behind a win at No. 2. W&M followed in the singles with five more wins, including the clincher on court two with Anghel's 12th singles win of the season.
 
How It Happened
- Senior Emma Fernald and freshman Mira Kernagis didn't drop a game against UNCW's Lucia Gomez and Anna Parker Shumate, winning 6-0 at No. 3. The Tribe tandem is 3-1 in dual-match play on line three.
- To clinch the doubles point, Davis and Anghel combined in a 6-4 win on court two against Stela Joksimovic and Alicia Eberwein. The Tribe pair improved to 6-1 overall in doubles.
- Capping off the doubles wins, the senior duo of Hedda Gurholt and Ine Stange came out victorious in a close match at No. 1, beating UNCW's Eda Arli and Elif Albayrak, 7-5. Gurholt and Stange moved to 4-2 at the top spot this season.
- Gurholt began singles action with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Eda Arli at the top position. Gurholt is 5-1 in dual match competition at No. 1.
- On court four, Davis also only dropped four games in her 6-1, 6-3 win over Alicia Eberwein. It was Davis's 15th singles win of the season as she moved to 5-1 in dual-match action.
- Anghel clinched the Tribe victory with her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Stela Joksimovic at No. 2. The Tribe senior moved to 12-7 overall in singles competition and 4-2 on line two.
- Junior Sia Chaudry fought back in a super tiebreaker after narrowly losing the second set to win in three sets at No. 3 against Katelyn Hubbard. She also improved to 4-2 in dual-match action.
- At No. 6, Fernald came back from a set down to defeat Lucia Gomez, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Fernald upped her win streak to four in singles action. The Tribe senior is 8-2 on the year.
 
Up Next
W&M continues its homestand with two matches next weekend. The Tribe takes on East Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. before hosting Wake Forest on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m.
