Tribe's Six-Game Win Streak Snapped at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - William & Mary men's basketball saw its six-game win streak come to an end at the hands of George Washington in a high-scoring affair, 99-86, on Saturday night in the nation's capital.

The Tribe (8-3) shot 63.6% in the opening 20 minutes and trailed by just a point, 53-52, at the half. The Revolutionaries used a 19-6 run and held W&M without a field goal for nearly eight minutes midway through the final frame to pull out their second straight victory. GW finished the contest at 52.9% shooting (37-of-70), including 50% in the decisive second half (16-of-32).

Junior Kilian Brockhoff led five Tribe players in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including a trio of 3-pointers. Classmate Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi tallied 13 points, while graduate student Cade Haskins finished with 12 points. Graduate student Jo'el Emanuel and senior Chase Lowe rounded out the Tribe's double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

After George Washington (8-2) scored the first points of the game on Christian Jones 3-pointer, W&M took its first lead behind an 11-2 run. Brockhoff scored the Tribe's first five, before a Haskins' lay-up stretched the advantage to 12-5. The lead reached 17-9 after a Reese Miller cutting lay-up at 14:24 mark.

The Revolutionaries scored 10-straight points as part of a 13-2 run to move back in front. Garrett Johnson converted back-to-back lay-ups, before a Jean Aranguren corner triple extended the home team's cushion to 22-19 at the 12-minute mark.

The opening 20 minutes remained back and forth with neither team taking more than a four-point lead. A Tyrone Marshall lay-up with 6:37 left in the half gave GW a 37-33, while the Green and Gold used a 9-2 run to take a 42-39 lead on a pair of Emanuel free throws at the 4:09 mark.

GW led 53-52 at the half after both teams shot the ball well. W&M connected at a 63.6% clip (21-of-33) in the opening 20 minutes, while the Revolutionaries shot 55.3% (21-of-38).

George Washington opened up an eight-point lead just seven minutes into the second half. Aranguren converted an old-fashion 3-point play followed by a Trey Autry corner 3-pointer to push the led to 68-60 at the 13:12 mark.

The home team's advantage was 74-65 on an Aranguren floater with 10:45 remaining in the contest.

Brockhoff answered with a 3-pointer just 15 seconds later to cut the gap to six. Unfortunately, the Revolutionaries would hold the Tribe without a field goal until the 2:42 mark and outscored the Tribe 19-6 during the stretch. Rafael Castro (7) and Arangurern (5) combined for 12 of GW's 19 points during the run. A pair of Aranguren free throws gave GW its largest lead of the game at 93-74 with 2:52 left.

The Tribe finished the contest shooting 48.4% (31-of-64) from the field, including 9-of-28 from 3 (32.1%). W&M hit 15-of-19 at free throw line (78.9%) and dished out 24 assists on its 31 made field goals. Miller led W&M with five assists, while Brockhoff, Vahlberg Fasasi, and Lowe each added four.

Aranguren led all scorers and five GW players in double figures with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3, and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. Castro finished with 18 points, while Marshall added 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Johnson tallied 12 points, and Luke Hunger rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
