Leffler's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Past Monmouth

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's soccer secured a key 1-0 victory over Monmouth on Sunday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.

The deciding goal came in the second half from Ellie Leffler, with William & Mary capitalizing on one of their seven shots on goal. The team's defense held strong, preventing Monmouth from registering a single shot on target throughout the match.

This win marks the sixth consecutive victory at home for the Tribe, showcasing their formidable presence on their home turf.

The match commenced with both teams establishing their defensive strategies.

The Tribe's offensive efforts began to emerge with Ivey Crain and Mia Abbey each attempting shots on goal, although the keeper managed to save Abbey's attempt.

As the period continued, the Green and Gold maintained pressure, with additional shots from Lindsay Wilson, Alyssa Kenealy, and Sophia Dallara testing the Hawks' defense, but without breaking the deadlock.

Monmouth's defense held firm, absorbing W&M's attacking pushes, while also responding with attempts of their own. Both teams exchanged possession, but neither side could capitalize on their chances. The period concluded with the score still tied 0-0, setting the stage for a competitive continuation.

The second half commenced as W&M intensified offensive pressure, culminating in several attempts on goal. Notably, Nora Green-Orset and Crain each took shots, with Crain's efforts twice forcing saves.

Momentum shifted decisively in the Tribe's favor in the 78th minute when Leffler scored the decisive goal from the left side of the box, assisted by Abbey.

Despite the Hawks' attempts to respond, including a shot late in the period, the home team maintained their lead. W&M concluded the match with a 1-0 victory, successfully defending their advantage through to the end of regulation.

Leffler scored the game-winning goal, her only shot on target. Abbey contributed by assisting on a goal and managed two shots on goal. Crain led the team with five shots, two of which were on goal. Doughty kept a clean sheet, securing a shutout in her 90 minutes on the field.

The next challenge for the Tribe is set for Sunday, Oct. 26, when they host Hampton in the regular season finale at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg, Va. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
