WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Despite 15 saves from junior goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus, William & Mary field hockey suffered a 4-0 setback to No. 13-ranked Monmouth on Friday afternoon at Busch field
de Jesus made eight of her 15 stops in the first quarter to keep the Hawks (10-2, 3-0 CAA) off the board in the opening 15 minutes. Included in her strong display, de Jesus made three-straight saves in the ninth minute, denying all three Monmouth chances over a 14-second span.
W&M (1-11, 0-3 CAA) initiated the second quarter with a strong offensive push led by junior
Josie Mae Gruendel, who orchestrated two penalty corners early in the frame. The second of the penalty corners resulted in a shot from Gruendel at the near post, but Monmouth goalkeeper Charlie Bowman made the stop.
de Jesus stopped Monmouth's first four shots of the second quarter, before the visitor finally broke through at the 22:21 mark. Monmouth capitalized on a penalty corner with Keely Bowers scoring on a shot from the top of the circle.
The Hawks doubled the lead in the 27th minute when Emily Singer's centering pass from the right side of the area deflected off a Tribe stick and into the right side of the cage.
Monmouth increased its lead to 3-0 in the third quarter as Claire Campen scored off a long pass from Lilly Ricks at the 43:28 mark.
The Tribe nearly found its first goal off a penalty corner just over 2:30 into the final period. On the play, senior
Erin Griffin redirected a shot from classmate
Amelia Morgan on cage, but Bowman made the save to keep the margin at three.
Singer scored her second goal of the day, beating de Jesus to the left side off a centering pass from Alicia Vanderlyde.
