Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day vs. #3 Virginia

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary field hockey celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Busch Field before dropping a 5-0 decision to No. 3-ranked Virginia.
 
Prior to the match, the Tribe honored its graduating class of Natasha Browning, Erin Griffin, Amelia Morgan, Eme Schmittel, Emme Schwartz, and Ellie Taylor.
 
The Tribe's best chance of the opening half came just over four minutes into the contest, but junior Anya Green's shot was blocked by UVA goalkeeper Emma Giesting.
 
Junior Alexandra de Jesus continued her strong play in goal, making three saves as the Tribe turned defended six Cavalier shots and two penalty corners in a scoreless opening 15 minute.
 
Virginia (11-1) finally broke through just over two minutes into the second quarter as Catalina Quinteros scored her first of two goals on the afternoon. She redirected a shot turned pass by Amelie Rees at the back post to give the visitor the lead. It would be the lone score of the first half. 
 
Suze Leemans doubled the UVA lead with a goal just 1:22 into the second half. The Cavaliers then scored three times over a 2:33 stretch in the third quarter to put the game away. Rylee Dennis scored off a rebound at the 38:19 mark, before a Frederique Vernooij goal off a penalty corner less than two minutes later. Quinteros capped the stretch with her second goal, scoring off a pass from Riley Savage with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. 
 
W&M (1-12) generated back-to-back penalty corners in the 51st and 52nd minutes. The second of the stretch resulted in an Emme Schwartz shot that was saved.
 
Perhaps the Tribe's best chance of the day come with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Junior Sam Daly got behind the UVA defense, but Giesting kicked the shot away.
 
UVA outhsot the Tribe, 25-5, on the afternoon and generated eight penalty corners to the Tribe's two. de Jesus produced her second-straight double-digit save game and fifth overall this season with 14 against the Cavaliers. de Jesus has 126 saves on the season which ranks 14th in W&M history and is the most for a Tribe goalkeeper since 2002.
 
William & Mary wraps up the home portion of its schedule next week when it welcomes CAA foe Hofstra to Busch Field on Friday, Oct. 24, at 3:30 p.m. The match will be streamed on FloCollege.
