PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — William & Mary men's soccer fell to Penn 6-1 on Tuesday at Rhodes Field. The Tribe managed seven shots on goal, but the Quakers' strong offense secured the win.
The first half commenced with Penn taking an early lead in the 7th minute. W&M responded with attempts from
Webb Kosich and
Thor Sigurjonsson, but Penn's goalkeeper made a crucial saves to maintain their advantage.
Despite efforts from
Gabe Ruitenberg and later
Alex Garrison, the Green and Gold was unable to break through Penn's defense. The Quakers extended their lead when again in the 16th minute, and the half concluded with W&M trailing 2-0.
The second half began with W&M aiming to shift momentum, as
Max Cooper tested Penn's goalkeeper early with a shot in the 53rd minute. Despite continuous pressure, the Quakers extended their lead with a goal at the 62-minute mark.
The Tribe responded with a goal by
Alex Garrison, assisted by
Alex Kochell and
Beckham Harris, narrowing the gap to 3-1. The goal was a product of a nice build-up, with Harris finding Kochell, who played a long cross to Garrison. Garrison finished the play with a blistering shot, marking the first goal of his career, while Harris and Kochell each picked up the first assists of their careers.
However, Penn capitalized on two penalty opportunities and another late goal to widen the scoreline to 6-1.
Looking ahead, the Green and Gold will host George Mason on October 21. The match is set to take place at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field in Williamsburg, Va., with kickoff at 6 p.m.
