WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— William & Mary women's soccer improved their win streak to four on Wednesday night at Martin Family Stadium, beating Commonwealth foe Richmond 1-0.
After a feeling-out process from both sides,
Ivey Crain attempted the first shot of the evening in the 15
th minute, but had the attempt scooped up by the Spider keeper.
The Tribe would kick off the scoring just five minutes later.
Leah Iglesias fired a shot from the middle of the box that was blocked by a Richmond defender and fell to
Peyton Costello, who finished off the rebound to give W&M (4-2-0) a 1-0 lead.
Costello, a freshman from Stony Brook, N.Y., continued the stellar start to her college career, with three goals and an assist just six games into the season.
The assist for Iglesias was her third of the season. The senior now has seven points in the last four games for the Tribe.
The action settled for the remainder of the first half with neither team registering a shot attempt in the final 25 minutes.
W&M led in shots 3-1 in the first half while heading to the break with their 1-0 lead.
Another freshman,
Kenley Campbell, tried to provide the second goal of the night for the Green and Gold, but had her try saved in the 54
th minute.
The Spiders did their best to equalize, with their first real chance coming in the 58
th minute. After an initial shot hit the woodwork, Richmond (2-2-1) collected the rebound and had a fairly open net to shoot at amidst the chaos. The second attempt ended up off target, however, and the game remained 1-0 W&M.
Richmond was back on the attack again a minute later, with a player breaking behind the Tribe backline.
Jazzy Lorenz, getting the start in net for W&M, made a great break on the ball though and was the first one there to make the save.
The stop was the only one of the night for Lorenz, but played a pivotal role in the outcome of the game.
The Tribe was strategic when choosing to attack in the second half, with Costello having the best chance to expand the lead in the 84
th minute. Her awkward angle shot from far out had the Richmond goalkeeper off balance, but hit the crossbar and went out of bounds.
W&M was able to hold off the Spiders down the stretch for a 1-0 victory over their local rival.
The final shot total read 9-6 in favor of the Tribe, as they improved to 15-1-1 all-time against the Spiders.
The four-game win streak is the first since 2017 for W&M and their first under
Julie Shackford. The last time W&M won five consecutive games was in 2015.
