WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team was edged by Stony Brook, 3-2 (26-24, 19-25, 25-11, 21-25, 15-12), in its CAA home opener at Kaplan Arena on Friday afternoon.
The Tribe (4-8, 0-3) bounced back after dropping the first and third sets to force a fifth frame, but the Seawolves (9-3, 2-1) broke open a 10-10 tie by scoring five of the final seven points to secure the win.
Lindsay Kahren led the Tribe with a career-high 27 digs, while
Amy Schwem posted season highs in assists (28) and digs (16) for her third double-double of the season.
Maddie Meyers and
Nicole Smith powered W&M's attack with 23 and 16 kills, respectively.
Much of the opening set was tightly contested, as the frame featured 14 ties before W&M edged ahead, 21-17, with a 5-1 spurt. The Tribe had a pair of set points 24-22, but SBU scored four consecutive points to claim the stanza. Meyers led the Tribe with seven kills in the opening frame, while Schwem totaled nine assists.
Although the Tribe fell behind 12-7 midway through the second frame, W&M charged back with an 11-3 run to build an 18-15 advantage. The Seawolves narrowed the margin to two on multiple occasions, but W&M finished strong to secure the set, 25-19. Kahren registered nine of her career-high 27 digs in the set.
Stony Brook opened the third stanza by scoring eight of the first 10 points, forcing W&M to use a timeout. The Tribe was unable to get closer than five during the remainder of the set as the Seawolves cruised, 25-11.
With the score knotted at 8-8 in the fourth set, the Tribe rattled off a 6-2 lead to take control. W&M extended its lead to as many as six multiple times before the Seawolves gradually pulled within just one at 21-20. However, W&M scored four of the final five points to force a fifth set. Meyers led the way with seven kills and a .353 hitting percentage, while Schwem dished out eight assists in the frame.
Things looked good early in the fifth set for the Tribe as it built a 9-6 lead, but SBU countered with a pivotal 7-1 run. W&M cut the margin to two twice, but the Seawolves escaped with the narrow conference road win.
W&M and SBU will square off again at Kaplan Arena on Saturday at 11 a.m., as the Tribe will honor its returning alumnae as part of Family Weekend. The contest will be broadcast on FloVolleyball.
