WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— William & Mary women's soccer used an early goal and another one late to pick up a 2-0 win over UNCW on Sunday at Martin Family Stadium.
The victory gets W&M off to a 2-0 start in conference play and 7-3 overall.
After pressing early for an early goal, the Tribe found what they were looking for in the 14
th minute.
Nora Green-Orset capitalized on a Seahawk giveaway right outside of the box. The junior took the ball in stride and fired a hard shot that found its way into the bottom left part of the goal.
The tally was the first of the season for Green-Orset, who now has four points on the year.
Pushing for an equalizer, UNCW took four of the next five shots in the contest but were unable to find the back of the net. During that span
Jazzy Lorenz was called on to make two saves for the Tribe.
The lone shot for W&M for the remainder of the first half was a try from
Ivey Crain in the 21
st minute that was saved.
Despite trailing in shots 6-3 through 45 minutes, the Tribe took their 1-0 lead to the halftime break.
The Green and Gold decided to turn up the intensity and go on the attack in the second half, rather than sit back and protect their lead.
Crain took four more cracks at goal in the first 17 minutes of the half, with two being off target and another two saved.
UNCW had their best chance to equalize the game in the 75
th minute. Off a cross from the right side a Seahawk had a clear look at goal just outside the 6-yard box. The shot beat Lorenz, but, luckily for the Tribe,
Ava Schultz was in the right place at the right time to make a stop on the goal line for the team save.
The momentum from the defensive stand led to a direct counterattack from W&M, with
Gabriella Kurtas making a run in the midfield to play the ball ahead towards
Marisa McClure. McClure crossed it into the box from the right side to find a sliding Crain in front of the goal who finished off the play to make it 2-0.
The goal gave Crain tallies in back-to-back games to begin CAA conference play, and four total goals on the season. Kurtas picked up her second assist of the year and McClure her first.
W&M used the spark of the insurance goal to limit any chances of a UNCW comeback, picking up their third consecutive win, 2-0.
The Tribe has shutout all three of their opponents during the win streak.
Lorenz finished with four saves on the afternoon, while the Tribe outshot the Seahawks 9-3 in the second half to hold a 12-9 advantage for the game.
