NORFOLK, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team put Hampton on its heels early and often on Thursday afternoon in Norfolk, earning a 3-0 win in their conference opener.
The Tribe wasted no time getting to work, with
Peyton Costello having her shot saved just two minutes in. Moments later
Leah Iglesias had a breakaway chance stopped by the keeper. Iglesias would also put a shot on in the 9
th minute which was also saved.
Eventually the constant pressure of the W&M (6-3-0, 1-0-0 CAA) attack broke down the Pirates' backline.
Mia Suchora played an arching pass towards
Ivey Crain, who got behind the Hampton (3-5-1, 0-1-0 CAA) defense and beat the keeper to put the Tribe up 1-0.
The 12
th minute strike was the third goal of the season for Crain, while the assist was the first of the year for Suchora.
W&M stayed hungry after the early goal, rarely allowing the ball to leave their attacking end throughout the first half.
Suchora looked to add a goal to her early assist but just missed the target in the 19
th minute.
The Tribe had a steady stream of corners in the first half but were unable to score off their four chances.
One of the more dangerous opportunities was in the 32
nd minute, when
Daisy West had her shot blocked off a corner. The ball continued to pin-ball around the 6-yard box for a couple moments, but no Tribe player could get a foot to it.
The score would remain 1-0 as the teams headed to halftime, but the Tribe's domination of the first 45 was evident in the shot column. W&M had 11 shot attempts, four of which were on net, while the Pirates didn't take single shot off in the first half.
Crain almost provided an insurance goal right off the bat in the second half with a shot in the 48
th minute that narrowly missed the crossbar.
She would again get a chance in the 61
st minute, having a shot saved and then another blocked off the rebound. That push of momentum, however, set the Tribe up for the extra cushion they were looking for.
Lindsay Wilson played a ball into the box off a corner kick in the 63
rd minute that was unable to be cleanly cleared by the Hampton defense. Suchora was the beneficiary, having the ball fall onto her feet, and calmly converted from right in front of the net to put the Tribe up 2-0.
The goal for Suchora gave her the first game of her career where she scored and picked up an assist.
After some other close calls to expand the lead, freshman
Lily Hall would put the cherry on top of the win in the 87
th minute. The Salt Lake City, Utah native, who was making made her first collegiate appearance, scored off a right foot strike to put the Tribe up by the final score of 3-0.
The final shot tally finished as lopsided as it was in the first half, with the Tribe holding a 23-1 advantage.
Jazzy Lorenz made the start in net for W&M with
Morgan Wood coming on for her at halftime, but neither were called upon to make a save.
The only shot of the day from the Pirates would come in the 51
