Women's Soccer Scores First ACC Win Since 2016, Downs NC State 1-0

RALEIGH, N.C.— Leah Iglesias converted on a cross from Molly Widderich in the 56th minute, spurring the William & Mary women's soccer team on to a 1-0 win at NC State on Thursday night.

The Tribe is now 6-0-1 against the Wolfpack in their last six meetings, dating back to 1997. W&M's last win over an ACC opponent came against Boston College in a neutral site meeting in 2017, while the program's last road ACC win was also at NC State in 2015.

After a sleepy start to the match, the Tribe defense was called upon to bend but not break in the 10th minute.

Jazzy Lorenz made a sliding save on an initial Wolfpack shot, but the rebound directed dangerously to the center of the box. Nicole Sellers stepped in to block the second shot attempt, allowing Lindsay Wilson to clear the ball out of harm's way, keeping the game scoreless.

W&M (5-3-0) used the momentum of the defensive stand to go on the offensive, maintaining possession in their attacking half for much of the next 10 minutes.

The first shot for the Tribe would come from Ivey Crain in the 14th minute, ripping a try from 25 yards out that required a leaping save from the NC State keeper.

W&M earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the 23rd minute and tasked Lindsay Wilson with taking the shot, but the chance was once again turned away by the Wolfpack goalie.

The Wolfpack had another close call in the 33rd minute, getting a header towards net off a contested cross in the box. The shot hit the left post, however, and went out of bounds for a goal kick.

Another attempt at goal by NC State from 15 yards out in the 41st minute would go wide and the teams would head to the half scoreless.

The Tribe returned to the attack early in the second half, with Crain having a shot saved and another go wide just three minutes into the period.

Lorenz made a stop in the 50th minute before the Tribe found the breakthrough they were searching for six minutes later.

Widderich played a cross in from the right side towards Iglesias, who was able to settle the bouncing ball and take a shot from just inside the penalty spot. The Wolfpack goalie got a piece of the attempt, but not enough of one, as it deflected off the left post into the net.

The 56th minute goal was the third of the year for Iglesias, who now has a team-high nine points. The assist from Widderich was her second of the season.

After allowing the goal, the Wolfpack pressed to equalize the contest, having grade-A chances in the 77th and 82nd minute. Lorenz was up for the challenge, however, making a pair of solid stops as the Tribe held on for a road victory to end non-conference play.

NC State led in shots 14-6, but shots on goal were tied 4-4. Lorenz finished with four saves on the evening, one shy of her career high.
