Men's Soccer Falls Short at New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H.— Despite battling hard, the William & Mary men's soccer team was unable to walk away with a result Saturday night, falling to New Hampshire 3-2 on the road.

UNH (1-1-1), who began the year inside the top-10 of the national poll, maintained possession in their attacking half early, with a shot wide in the 7th minute and a potentially dangerous cross in the 10th minute that was cut off by Cole McNally in net for the Tribe (1-1-0).

The Wildcats persistence paid off three minutes later with a goal that put them up 1-0.

Evan Rabush took the Tribe's first shot of the game moments later but missed just high.

Sam Delgado, who picked up his first career assist in his Tribe debut at Binghamton, fired a strong shot in the 25th minute, but the UNH keeper made a diving save to keep it a 1-0 game.

The Tribe was able to maintain possession in their attacking end over the final 20 minutes of the half and were eventually able to tie the match in the 37th minute.

Diogo Branco lofted a promising ball into the box towards Delgado that drew the UNH keeper out. Before either got to the ball a Wildcat defender tried to clear it and deflected the ball into the unattended net for an own goal, tying the game 1-1.

That is how the match would go to the halftime break, with W&M leading in shots 4-3.

New Hampshire didn't waste much time getting their lead back once the second half got underway. The Wildcats scored on a header off a free kick in the 49th minute to own a 2-1 lead.

Play stayed mostly in the midfield over the next 10 minutes until New Hampshire was awarded a penalty in the 61st minute and converted to take a 3-1 advantage.

Delgado came inches away from cutting the Green and Gold deficit to one when he rifled a free kick from just outside the box in the 67th minute, his shot barely went over the crossbar.

The third time was the charm for Delgado, who's third chance of the night resulted in a goal to pull the Tribe within one, 3-2.

Tre Barrett, from the right side of the field, played a ball toward the far post. Lucas Caldas out-jumped the keeper and got a head on the ball which was then put in the back of the net by Delgado with a header of his own.

The goal was the first of his college career, while Caldas and Barrett each picked up assists on the play for their fifth and third points on the year respectively.

Despite pushing for an equalizer down the stretch, W&M's comeback effort would fall short, losing 3-2 for their first loss of the season.

Shots on the evening finished even, 8-8.
