First Half Goals Propel Men's Soccer to 2-0 Win in Home Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary men's soccer team opened their home schedule in style, taking care of Longwood 2-0 on Wednesday at Martin Family Stadium. The effort was W&M's second clean-sheet victory in the first three matches of the season.

Aidan Morrison kickstarted the Tribe in the 13th minute with a rocket from the top of the box.

The sophomore executed a perfect give-and-go with Lucas Cladas just outside of the 18-yard box that allowed him to put some extra mustard on the strike. The ball found its way to the top corner of the net to give W&M (2-1-0) a 1-0 lead.

The goal was the first of the season for Morrison, the assist for Caldas was his second of the campaign as he's recorded a point in all three games in 2024.

Sam Delgado, who grabbed his first career goal on Saturday at New Hampshire, had a close call in the 26th minute trying to expand the Tribe lead.

Longwood registered their first shot of the contest a minute later, but it was a non-threatening attempt that rolled safely into the arms of Ryan Eapen, who made the start in net for the Tribe.

The Lancers had a player shown a yellow card in the 35th minute that led to a W&M free kick from 30 yards out.

Tre Barrett served the ball into the box and Hamilton Howes was the first player to it, heading the ball toward the right post and into the net to expand the Tribe lead to 2-0.

The goal was the first of Howes career, while Barrett picked up his second assist in as many games. The freshman now has four points in his first three collegiate matches.

Shots from Caldas and Thor Sigurjonsson missed the target narrowly in the waning minutes of the half and the Tribe headed to the halftime break with a 2-0 lead.

Through 45 minutes of play W&M held a 8-3 advantage in shots.

The Green and Gold looked for chances to expand their lead to 3-0 early in the second half, with Delgado and Barrett having shots saved by the Lancer keeper.

Longwood, looking for an opportunity to get on the board, were thwarted by the Tribe backline all night.

Eapen made a stop in the 54th minute, and later in the half, Cole McNally, who entered the game for Eapen, made a save to keep the W&M lead at two.

With a clean-sheet victory in sight, the Tribe played the possession game down the stretch and claimed the 2-0 win in their home opener.

The final shot tally read 15-7 in favor of W&M, while Eapen made three saves and McNally one.

W&M continued their unbeaten streak against the Lancers, improving to 9-0-2 in the all-time series.
