DURHAM, N.C. – William & Mary field hockey suffered a 5-0 setback at No. 5-ranked Duke in the season opener on Friday evening.
The contest was originally scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time but was delayed for three hours and 50 minutes due to lightning in the area.
The Tribe (0-1) nearly shutout the Blue Devils in the opening 15 minutes with graduate student goalkeeper
Maddie George making four first-quarter saves. Duke (1-0) finally broke through with just over a minute remaining in the period on an Alaina McVeigh goal off a penalty corner.
Just over five minutes into the second frame, the Tribe had a golden chance to pull even. W&M generated back-to-back penalty corners but could not get off a shot on the chances.
The Blue Devils tacked on goals from Brynn Crouse and Kyle Massey in the 24th and 29th minutes to open up a 3-0 advantage at the half.
Duke added goals in the third and fourth quarter with McVeigh scoring her second of the contest to push the lead to 4-0. Logan Clouse provided the final marker off a deflection in the 50th minute.
