Women's Soccer Scores Twice in Final Five Minutes, Beats VCU 2-1

RICHMOND, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team pulled off an electrifying 2-1 comeback victory on Thursday night, scoring twice in the final five minutes to beat VCU in Richmond.

Lindsay Wilson and Peyton Costello provided the goals for the Tribe.

Both teams went through a feeling out process in the early going with no shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.

The Tribe took their first two shots in the 23rd and 28th minute when Ivey Crain had an attempt from just outside the six-yard box block and Leah Iglesias had a chance saved by the VCU (0-4-0) keeper to keep it a 0-0 game.

Emma D'Alesandro placed one on net for the Tribe in the 40th minute that once again was saved by the VCU goalie that sent the match to the halftime break in a scoreless tie.

Through the first 45 minutes VCU held an advantage in the shot total 5-4, but none of the Rams attempts were on target.

W&M looked poised to provide the first goal of the game in the 55th minute when Mia Suchora and Lindsay Wilson had a shot blocked and saved in the span of 10 seconds.

VCU used that defensive stand to spur a counterattack that led to a goal in the 57th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Jazzy Lorenz, making her third straight start in goal for W&M, made a stop in the 59th minute to keep it a one-score game.

The Tribe's ferocious comeback began with just under five minutes remaining in the match, with Lindsay Wilson burying a right-foot shot into the bottom left of the goal to level things at 1-1.

The goal was the first of the year for the sophomore.

The Green and Gold didn't stop there, however. Determined to bring a win back to Williamsburg, Crain, Leah Iglesias and Peyton Costello executed a spectacular tic-tac-toe play in the 88th minute, with Costello tapping the ball home into the wide-open goal.

The tally was the second of season for the freshman and salted away a thrilling come from behind 2-1 win for W&M.

VCU ended up with a shot advantage of 13-10 on the evening.

The Tribe, now 2-2-0 on the season, own a 21-7-4 advantage all-time over VCU.
