Women's Soccer Cruises to 3-0 Win at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team controlled things from start to finish on Sunday night, taking a 3-0 win over George Mason in Fairfax. The victory was the first of the season for the Tribe who now sits 1-2-0.

The Tribe set the tone from the get-go with Ivey Crain, the national leader in shots per game, coming inches from putting W&M up in the first minute. The junior's shot, moments after the opening kick, beat the Mason (0-2-2, 0-0 A10) keeper but struck the crossbar and went out of play.

W&M used the momentum of the early shot to continuously put pressure on the Patriots backline throughout the first half.

Keeping the ball in their own attacking half for all but a few seconds in the opening frame, the Tribe found the breakthrough they were looking for in the 24th minute.

Crain was able to meet a pass from Leah Iglesias in stride while getting behind the Patriot defense. She then calmly buried the chance for her first goal of the season, giving W&M a 1-0 lead.

The Tribe continued to dictate the game after the Crain score, holding the ball in the attacking half while giving Mason little opportunities to counterattack.

Ava Marvin looked to double the W&M advantage in the 40th minute, speeding past her defender to get a clean look at goal. The Patriot keeper was just able to get a foot on the attempt and steer the ball wide, keeping it a 1-0 game.

George Mason took their only shot of the half in the 42nd minute, which was easily scooped up by Jazzy Lorenz making her second career start for the Tribe in goal.

When the opening 45 drew to a close, the visiting Green and Gold held a 6-1 advantage in shots to go with their 1-0 lead.

Picking up where they left off, Kenley Campbell, who made her first career start on Sunday, played a dangerous ball into the box 40 seconds into the second half, forcing the GMU keeper to punch the ball away and concede a corner.

The early attack set up the Tribe to double their lead moments later. Peyton Costello burst down the left side of the field to play a cross that found Iglesias 12 yards out. Iglesias' shot attempt navigated traffic in front of the goal and found the bottom left of the net to put the Tribe up 2-0 in the 47th minute.

The tally was the first of the season for Iglesias and her first game of her W&M career with a goal and an assist, while the helper from Costello was the first of her young college career.

Leading by two, the Tribe played the possession game, keeping the Patriots defense on their heels while also limiting chances for the hosts to cut into the W&M lead.

Iglesias tried for another in the 69th minute, getting a clean look at goal from the left side of the box that required a sprawling save by the keeper.

The Patriots tried their best to mount a comeback with limited opportunities. Lorenz made a save on what was just the second shot of the game for the Patriots with under 20 minutes to go.

Marisa McClure rattled the crossbar in the 78th minute in before the Tribe added an insurance goal minutes later.

With just under four minutes to play, Nora Green-Orset fired a shot that hit the woodwork but ricocheted right to the foot of Sheridan Brummett who cleaned up the rebound, sending the Tribe back to Williamsburg with a 3-0 win.

Dominating from start to finish, the Tribe owned a 19-3 shot advantage, with Lindsay Wilson, Iglesias and Crain all taking four shots individually.
