ODU Uses Early Goals to Best Women's Soccer in Home Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— Despite holding a 15-13 advantage in shots, Old Dominion bested the William & Mary women's soccer team 2-0 on Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium.

The match served as the first of nine home games for the Tribe.

The reigning Sun Belt champions, ODU (2-1-0, 0-0 SBC) wasted no time getting to work scoring a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the contest.

Nora Green-Orset appeared to have pulled the Tribe within a goal in the 13th minute when she fired a shot coming off a corner from Lindsay Wilson. Her attempt beat the keeper, but was gotten to at the last second by the head of an ODU defender, steering it clear of the back of the net for another W&M (0-2-0, 0-0 CAA) corner.

The Tribe held off the Monarchs from adding more insurance before Ivey Crain seemed poised to put the hosts on the board in the 26th minute. Crain, a preseason All-CAA selection, broke through the ODU backline for a clean crack at goal, but the Monarch goalie was up for the challenge, popping the ball up in the air and recovering it before it snuck across the goaline.

Both teams traded chances but were unable to convert for the remainder of the half. Kenley Campbell had the last chance of the opening 45, but missed just high and ODU took a 2-0 lead to the break.

Jazzy Lorenz, making her first career start for the Tribe in goal, made stops in the 48th and 54th minute to keep it a two-goal game.

The Green and Gold took the next five shots of the match but were unable to solve the ODU defense and keeper. Leah Iglesias began the parade of chances with a shot that missed high before Ivey Crain had three saved and one miss the target.

Lorenz added three more stops in net down the stretch, but ultimately ODU headed back to Norfolk with a 2-0 win.

The Tribe placed 10 of their 15 shots for the evening on goal. Ivey Crain had a game-high seven shots for the match with five finding the frame.

When the dust settled Lorenz finished with six saves for the Tribe in her collegiate debut.
