Baseball Clinches CAA Championship No. 5 Seed with Combined Two-Hitter

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball (30-24, 13-14 CAA) brought out the theatrics as it took the regular season finale by storm, stomping Campbell (31-22, 12-15 CAA), 11-3, to advance to next week's CAA Championships.

For the fifth consecutive tournament, and the third in Head Coach Mike McRae's three years, the Tribe will make a run at the conference title in the tournament as it clinched the No. 5 seed with Saturday's victory.

Travis Garnett, Reed Interdonato and Alex Markus combined for just one hit over seven shutout innings out of the bullpen to complete the combined two-hitter that Owen Pierce started. The Tribe staff has posted an impressive four combined two-hitters in 2024.

Momentum was unshaken by a rain delay, as freshman Anthony Greco returned to his suspended at-bat in the top of the sixth - an hour and 36-minutes later - to draw a walk before Nate Goranson launched his fifth home run of the year off the party deck roof in left field.

Freshman Trey Christman led the Tribe with three hits and three RBI, matching his season-high marks in both. Greco notched a pair of hits and RBI, driving in the game's first run and belting his first career triple.

Right-fielder Christian Rush had a pair of web gems to save four runs, first stranding three in the second inning as he squeezed it at the wall for the final out of the frame. Showing off his athleticism again in the fifth inning, Rush chased one down at the line to hold a runner at third base.

For the third consecutive game, the Tribe scored first, this time powering to the deciding 4-3 lead through two innings. The Green & Gold added five runs in an explosive fifth inning and tacked on a pair in the sixth for the 11-3 tally.

Joe Delossantos got on first for the Tribe, drawing a four-pitch walk. W&M's first hit of the day was a run-scoring double off the bat of Greco.

The Fighting Camels got a pair of runs across in the bottom of the first to swap leads, but the Tribe had a loud answer in the second.

Three hits scored three runs for the visitors as Luca Trigiani took a trip around the bases after drawing a leadoff walk. Josiah Seguin and Parker each singled, the latter notching an RBI. Parker stole second to draw a throw and head's up baserunning by Seguin added another for the Tribe. Delossantos drove a double down the left line to score Parker and take a 4-2 lead.

Attempting to chip away, Campbell added their final run of the contest in the second inning.

Garnett went 3.0 shutout innings, not allowing a hit until his final frame. The lefty struck out four and improved to 4-0 on the season as he earned the victory.

The Tribe added seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings, scattered around a weather delay. Greco's second hit of the day in the fifth inning was his first career triple, scoring Parker following a leadoff HBP. With the freshman on third, Goranson wore his second pitch of the series and his seventh in as many games and Trigiani drew a walk to load the bases.

Two outs and three on was the situation for Christman as he blooped a double into shallow right field, evading three Camels. Trigiani was called safe in a bang-bang play at the plate and all three runners came around to score for the visitors. Seguin belted his second hit of the afternoon to score Christman and cap a five-run fifth inning.

Following the delay, Goranson's two-run homer was for double digits, all but securing the Tribe's pivotal win.

Entering the game in the sixth, Interdonato sat three Camels down in order to open his outing. Going 2.2 innings, the junior didn't allow a hit and fanned one to hold the Tribe's impending victory.

Markus took over with two down in the eighth, retiring the third out in a single pitch. With just seven more pitches, he worked through a 1-2-3 ninth to slam the door on the game. Seguin ended the contest as he went airborne to glove a line drive and complete Markus' perfect final inning.
